On the front of BfK this month is the cover of Yesterday by Adèle Geras. The artwork is by Carolyn Piggford. This book is one from the 'Teenage Memoirs' series published by Walker (see the article, All Their Yesterdays, in this issue) and Adèle, of course, is the subject of our Authorgraph - see centre-spread. A familiar situation, but the story is told in a gentle reassuring way as the supposed monster's shadow, feet, teeth and eyes all turn out to be ordinary objects in Dan's room - but then a small, sad 'Waaahh' comes from under the bed! Now Dan plays parent as the monster complains about the things that are keeping him awake. 6/7 year-olds will recognise Dan's problems - and Mum's responses.
