BfK No. 78 - January 1993

Cover story
On the front of BfK this month is the cover of Yesterday by Adèle Geras. The artwork is by Carolyn Piggford. This book is one from the 'Teenage Memoirs' series published by Walker (see the article, All Their Yesterdays, in this issue) and Adèle, of course, is the subject of our Authorgraph - see centre-spread. Our thanks to Walker Books for their help in using this illustration.

Ruskin Splinter has little or nothing going for him when it comes to being chosen for the hero in the school play. Yet, behind that sand in the face demeanour cowers a Charles Atlas who, when forced into a showdown in Lizard Street between wimp and monster, saves the day in heroic style. This is utterly wacky, full of outrageous cartoon-like characters and bound to be popular as its Smarties Book Prize (1991) testifies. Ridley has to be Dahl's successor.
