BfK No. 78 - January 1993

Cover story
On the front of BfK this month is the cover of Yesterday by Adèle Geras. The artwork is by Carolyn Piggford. This book is one from the 'Teenage Memoirs' series published by Walker (see the article, All Their Yesterdays, in this issue) and Adèle, of course, is the subject of our Authorgraph - see centre-spread. Our thanks to Walker Books for their help in using this illustration.

Space Demons

Gillian Rubinstein
1 hr 10 mins, AUDIO BOOK, dramatised one cassette
10-14 Middle/Secondary

This is most unusual and striking audio listening. It has a cast of nine Australian voices and the dramatisation is racy and convincing. The accent's inescapable link with Home and Away makes it immediately attractive to adolescent listeners, but the content is far superior. Four children become locked in a battle with the artificial intelligence of the computer game, Space Demons, on which they have become hooked. The battle is complex and sinister, and forces the children to confront their own distrubed natures and family relationships. The sound effects heighten the real dramatic tension and the whole is exciting and absorbing.
